How Pipe Bursting Works 

A steel bursting head — slightly larger in diameter than the existing pipe — is pulled through the old sewer line by a hydraulic pulling machine. As the bursting head moves through the pipe it fractures the existing pipe outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling new HDPE pipe into place behind it. The result is a complete new sewer line installed in the same path as the old one, with the old pipe permanently displaced into the surrounding soil.

When Pipe Bursting Is the Right Choice 

Pipe bursting works well when the existing pipe follows a relatively straight path, soil conditions allow the old pipe to fracture and displace properly, and there are no significant utility conflicts along the pipe route. We assess every situation with a camera inspection before recommending pipe bursting. Not every sewer line is a good candidate and we will tell you honestly when traditional excavation is the better approach. 

Orangeburg pipe — the bituminous fiber sewer pipe installed in many Northern Virginia homes built between the 1940s and early 1980s — is one of the most common candidates for pipe bursting. Orangeburg cannot be lined with CIPP because it’s too deteriorated, but it can often be burst and replaced with new HDPE pipe in a single trenchless operation.
